Smaller councils ‘push’ technology further to overcome unique challenges

District councils – particularly in Northland – are often leaders in their field when it comes to using technology to overcome some rather unique challenges.

This is the view of Bill Ruys, IT manager of the Kaipara District Council, based in Dargaville.

“Often we have to push the technology to compensate for our unique challenges,” says Ruys in this week’s instalment of our In The Front Room video series.

He explains that smaller district councils offer much of the same services as larger councils, but with fewer resources.

With around 65 employees, the Kaipara District Council serves a population of close to 20,000 people across an area of over 3000km2.

In this video, Ruys shares how his team needs to progressive in how it uses technology to deliver the tools to support a very diverse business.

He also explains how faster connectivity will enable the broader uptake of hosted services and collaboration tools like video conferencing among regional councils.

Watch’s the interview with Ruys below, or view other videos in our series here.

Bill’s views are backed up by Murray Foster (at the TCDC) in his interview in our recent Council IT feature (ref Q2 iStart magazine cover story) – pity it all turms to cack when it comes to the BIG council…
