Visible Results’ John Holley on using fibre to decouple the data centre

Visible Results uses fibre to extend its reach around the world. Until a year ago the Auckland-based company would refresh databases in Australia, Singapore and the United Kingdom in batch mode. John Holley, the company’s general manager operations says the business now operates a 24 by 7 environment where data is available all the time.

In the video clip below from the Gen-i ICT Conference 2012 in Auckland, Holley explains how this works before going on to describe the challenges Visible Results faced when moving premises.

As part of the move, the company decided to use fibre to relocate separately from the data centre which was previously on site. Holley says people were worried about what would happen if the connection went down – something he adds hasn’t happened.

After the move, his business intelligence people told Holley the fast data connection meant performance was as good as having the servers in the office with them.

Holley is also chair of the Liston College board of trustees and shares his views on the opportunities that faster connectivity presents to schools and students, as well.
